Cultural experiences in Bressanone

Welcome to the former episcopal town

First mentioned in writing in 901, Bressanone in the heart of South Tyrol is considered the oldest town in the Tyrol. Its historic arcades and winding alleys have kept the spirit of the centuries alive.

Bressanone is known especially for its ecclesiastical buildings. In addition to the cathedral, you will find the Diocesan Museum in the Hofburg with a valuable art collection of sculptures and panel paintings as well as the cathedral treasure and a nativity scene exhibition that is open to the public throughout the year.

The monastery of Novacella, one of the largest monastery complexes in Tyrol, with its Romanesque collegiate church, the Gothic cloister, the monastery library and the so-called miracle fountain, is also well worth a visit. Formerly a stopover for pilgrims, the monastery now produces the renowned Valle Isarco wines, such as the Gewürztraminer.

By contrast, a detour into the world of medicine is waiting for you at the Pharmacy Museum, where old equipment, tablet presses, reference books, ingredients and much more are on display.

Needless to say, Bressanone and its environs also have plenty to offer for active vacationers. Be it hiking, biking or skiing: The Plose, at over 2500 m, is not only the town's home mountain, but also a real adventure mountain and a popular area for winter sports.

You can sample a wide variety of sweet and savoury South Tyrolean baked goods and watch the master bakers in action. Speaking of the old town: every two years, the Bressanone Old Town Festival gets things moving with bands and culinary delights. The Bressanone Water Light Festival in May and the Christmas market on Cathedral Square are equally popular.
