Excursions ... ... into a colourful natural scenery

The excursions you can take during your holiday in the Eisack Valley are as varied as the valley itself. It not only offers breathtaking natural scenery, but also a rich cultural history. The town of Sterzing, for example, is famous for its Gothic old town and the historic customs house, while in Bressanone the impressive cathedral and the former Augustinian canons' monastery of Neustift are among the highlights. The medieval fortress of Franzensfeste and Rodenegg are also worth a visit and offer an insight into the history of the region. Those who like to celebrate should not miss the numerous village festivals, the Törggelen in Klausen or the wine festival in Gufidaun. Here you can enjoy traditional food and wine in convivial company with the locals. Whether you are interested in culture, history or traditions, there is something to discover for every taste in the Eisack Valley.

Keschtnweg: The South Tyroleans call the chestnuts "Keschtn", which are a must at every "Törggelen" (a traditional festive meal to celebrate the harvest and new wine in the fall). The Keschtnweg leads over 60 km from Novacella near Bressanone to the Renon high plateau near Bolzano and is a wonderful nature experience - and not just in autumn.

Barbiano waterfalls: Starting in Barbiano, the trail first leads to the 85 m tall lower waterfall and then up to the upper waterfall via a wildly romantic path. The third highlight of this hike are the three interlocking churches in the hamlet of Bad Dreikirchen. Another highlight is the Villanderer Alm, which delights with its unique autumn landscape and beautiful views of the Dolomites. Here you can hike along the themed trails and enjoy the colourful splendour of autumn. The Eisack Valley enchants hikers with its breathtaking nature and landscape.

A variety of playgrounds nestled among lush meadows, themed trails and exciting activities provide plenty of adventure in the Valle Isarco. For example, take a walk along the bee trail near Campo di Trens and learn interesting facts about the golden honey and the industrious workers. You should also not miss the Woody Walk on the Plose, which is suitable for prams, where various stations such as a forest telephone and a Kneipp facility invite you to play and have fun.

Things get a bit more sporty with a speedy mountain cart descent on the Plose or in Ladurns.

Cycling in the mountains

The highlight for bikers in the Valle Isarco is the Plose Looping, where you can do a looping with your bike right next to the mountain station. The Bressanone Bike Park is also located here and offers easy to challenging routes for mountain bikers. There are numerous steep bends to master on the Plose Single Trail "Flow 6.6 km".

Those who prefer asphalt paths, on the other hand, can cycle along the Brennero Cycle Route along the former railway road for about 100 km along the Valle Isarco to the provincial capital, passing many sights such as the fortress of Fortezza Franzensfeste and Lake Varna.

Climbing is very popular with both young and old in the Valle Isarco. Especially in Funes, climbing enthusiasts will get their money's worth. In the climbing area of Zanser Alm with 50 routes, children can gain their first experiences, but professionals will not miss out here either. Among the classics in Funes are the Günther Messner Climb and the ascent of the 3025 m high Sass Rigas, the main peak of the peaks of the Odle.
In Vipiteno, a detour to the Skytrek high ropes course with ziplines will provide plenty of variety, while the climbing route Ölberg in the Valle di Pitches will take you up rugged rock faces.

If the weather doesn't play along, the Vertikale Climbing Centre in Bressanone is at your disposal with over 220 routes and a bouldering hall.

Events in the Valle Isarco

Tradition and culture

Events in the Valle Isarco Tradition and culture

In autumn, many traditional festivals and events take place in the Eisack Valley, where you can experience local culture and customs up close. For example, Törggelen is a popular tradition where people meet in cosy inns and taste South Tyrolean specialities such as chestnuts, bacon and wine. Also highly recommended is the Keschtnfest in Feldthurns, which is also about the chestnut as an autumn fruit and its processing. The chestnut festival in Bressanone and the autumn festival in Klausen are also very popular and offer a great experience for the whole family.

Churches, city museums, art collections - South Tyrol is rich in treasures that tell the history of the country. A trip to Bressanone with its cathedral and diocesan museum is a must.
The secrets of the mountains, however, can be discovered in the Provincial Museum of Mining in Racines and in the Villandro mine. You can admire special geodes from the interior of the South Tyrolean mountains in the Mineral Museum in Teis.
Last but not least, a trip to times that have long since passed is not to be missed: from the Trostburg Castle  in the village of Ponte Gardena, which was first mentioned in the 12th century, to the baroque Wolfsthurn Castle with its impressive 365 windows, now home to the Provincial Museum of Hunting and Fishing.

Culinary highlights in the Valle Isarco

Pleasurable voyage of discovery

Culinary highlights in the Valle Isarco Pleasurable voyage of discovery

The Valle Isarco is synonymous with "Törggelen". In autumn, traditional hearty dishes are served in the old farmhouses and taverns of the valley. Roasted chestnuts, sweet "Krapfen" (doughnuts) and new wine round off the meal. This region of South Tyrol is indeed famous for its wines, especially the white wines that have a fruity aroma. The noble beverages can be tasted during a guided tour of the winery.

Other delicacies include the apples from our village of Naz-Sciaves, which is not called the apple high plateau for nothing, as well as the Barbiano plum and the Funes spectacled sheep. Festivals take place in the various villages throughout the year, during which you can enjoy these and many other specialities.
